SELHAC 2024: A Halal Experience Like No Other

My first time at SELHAC 2024 was definitely an experience to remember

Conventions are known for gathering people with shared passions, but I’ve never really been a convention enthusiast—until SELHAC 2024 came along. And let me tell you, it was an experience I’ll never forget!

So, what exactly is SELHAC 2024? It’s the Selangor International Halal Convention, organized by Halal International Selangor (HIS Toyyiba Sdn Bhd). If you’re in the halal industry, you already know this is a major event on the calendar.

As I arrived at the lively Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, the first thing that caught my eye was the massive banner welcoming everyone. And there it was—the Kinihalal logo! No surprise, since we’re the official media partner. It felt like the perfect way to kick off my first-ever SELHAC!

Once inside, I was immediately immersed in a sea of vibrant colors and buzzing energy. Rows of booths displayed a variety of offerings, and the delicious aroma of food filled the air. Local SMEs proudly showcased their halal food products, while both governmental and non-governmental agencies highlighted their services, creating an engaging and dynamic atmosphere.

As I explored further, one booth in particular grabbed my attention—a halal pani puri stall! If you know anything about Indian street food, you’ll understand why this stood out. Seeing a halal version of such a classic dish was a pleasant surprise. That’s where I met Kak Tun, the spirited founder of Kak Tun Pani Puri. Her enthusiasm was contagious, and our chat quickly became one of the highlights of my day. She eagerly answered all my questions with a bright smile.

When I asked her what brought her to SELHAC 2024, Kak Tun excitedly shared that she had been personally invited by the organizers. It was her first convention too! She explained how SELHAC is a golden opportunity for local SMEs, opening doors to business deals not just in Malaysia but globally. Her excitement made it clear—this event was a game-changer for businesses like hers.

Later in the day, I attended the Halal Certification Acceleration Forum, with a session titled "Government Policies And Industry Realities: Bridging The Gap." The discussion was eye-opening, highlighting innovative partnerships and cutting-edge government initiatives that now allow businesses to fast-track their halal certification in just 30 days—without breaking the bank. It was clear that SELHAC wasn’t just about networking; it was about tangible, transformative progress.

The Kahoot game which I won three times since I was in the top 10!

The convention wasn’t all business, though—there were plenty of fun activities to keep things lively, like Kahoot games that brought me right back to my college days. And guess what? I won all three sessions! As if that wasn’t enough, I even snagged a prize in the lucky draw. The emcee jokingly remarked that I must’ve woken up on the right side of the bed that morning. It’s little moments like these that made the entire experience even more memorable and enjoyable.

All in all, SELHAC 2024 was far more than I ever expected from my first convention experience. It wasn’t just the insightful forums or the business opportunities that left an impression—it was the vibrant atmosphere, the chance encounters with inspiring people like Kak Tun, and the unexpected fun that made it truly memorable. From SMEs showcasing their halal innovations to government-led initiatives speeding up certification processes, SELHAC proved itself to be a powerful platform for growth and collaboration. Whether you’re in the halal industry or simply curious, this convention has something for everyone. I’ll definitely be marking my calendar for next year!
