Muzz Launches #MerdekaDari Campaign to Support Muslim Singles in Malaysia and Indonesia
The London-based Muslim marriage app, Muzz, launched their first regional campaign in Indonesia and Malaysia in conjunction with the Merdeka celebrations. Both Indonesia and Malaysia are celebrating their Merdeka Day in the month of August- the 17th for Indonesia and 31st for Malaysia.
Commonly in Southeast Asia, marriage is not just for the couple but a big deal for parents and the society. Especially when you’re expected to get married before a certain age, be financially stable with a promising career, a house, a car and a whole load of savings! This was very possible perhaps in the 80s but millennials and Gen Zs think otherwise.
Social pressures within a (somewhat) judgemental society makes it even more difficult to be married let alone finding a partner. Many Southeast Asian women are now more career driven, highly educated and financially independent, which seems to be a good measure of a better quality of life, but not what it is when finding a husband.
Based on the findings from focus groups and events, the Southeast Asia team at Muzz came up with an idea to help change this negative perception to a positive one. Hence, the #MerdekaDari campaign was launched!
#MerdekaDari aims to highlight “unconventional” single Muslims in Indonesia and Malaysia, struggling to find love. The objective with this campaign builds awareness on the societal issues that are typically brushed under the carpet and considered a taboo.
At Muzz, they believe that there is someone for everyone, as written in the Quran Surah An-Naba 78:8 “And we created you in pairs”.
6 singles from Indonesia and Malaysia were interviewed and their stories are shared through a raw and emotional documentary style video. Released on 17 August 2024, marking the 79th year of Indonesia independence, marks great significance to the message that Muzz wants to send out to single Muslims in Southeast Asia and anywhere in the world!
The 6 individuals featured in the documentary are:
Qila (Malaysia)
A 36 year old, recently divorced single mother from Kota Belud, Sabah, with her fear of being judged by society.
Reza (Malaysia)
A 37 year old single father with 2 young daughters struggling with his own trauma from past relationships failure.
Suri (Malaysia)
Married and divorced at a very young age, she wants to be able to trust again.
Kristina (Indonesia)
A revert by choice struggling to find someone who wants to accept her as who she is, but more importantly of the same faith.
Rida (Indonesia)
A 40 year old single mother who wants to be free to make her own decisions- for herself and her son.
Wibi (Indonesia)
A 36 year old single man who is still finding a woman who can accept him as sole provider to his divorced parents.
The #MerdekaDari campaign runs for 1 month until 16 September 2024, which is Malaysia Day.
