Usman (RA) systematically split his resources to protect against total loss.
Multiple Streams: He did not rely solely on trade caravans. He diversified into real estate, agriculture, and livestock across the Arabian Peninsula.
Geographic Risk: By trading across multiple markets—Syria, Egypt, and Persia—he ensured that if one region faced a drought or conflict, his investments in other regions would remain stable.
Asset Splitting: If he had enough capital to buy one expensive, luxury item, he would often choose to buy two different, slightly less expensive items instead. This “doubled” his chances of a successful sale and “halved” the impact if one item failed to sell.
Today, we call this Asset Allocation or Hedging. While others were “putting all their eggs in one basket,” Usman (RA) was building a diversified portfolio centuries before modern finance theory was formalized.
