AirAsia updates policy to allow female cabin crew wear hijab flexibly

AirAsia announced that its female cabin crew are now given an option to wear the hijab while on duty according to its latest cabin crew uniform policy update, which reflects the airline’s people-first approach and ongoing commitment to inclusivity.

The airline in a statement said, the decision was reached based on the feedback gathered from its employees and the public, as the company aims to build a workplace that every Allstar (the name of AirAsia employee) can feel confident, comfortable and proud to represent the brand.

Group CEO of AirAsia Aviation Group, Bo Lingam said, the policy update marks another step towards the airline’s evolution as a global carrier that is supported by a diverse workforce.

“Our uniforms have always highlighted professionalism, safety, and comfort.

The launch of the new update is timely as Ramadan 2026 is just around the corner, allowing female cabin crews to practice their beliefs while working comfortably.

“This development strengthens those values by giving employees the option to represent AirAsia in a way that aligns with their beliefs,” he said.

Previously, he noted that hijabs were only worn on certain routes such as Jeddah, where the local regulations there require it.

However, he said this new update will allow all female crew members to wear the hijab flexibly and as seen fit across the entire AirAsia network, without compromising the airline’s iconic identity.

Group Head of Cabin Crew Department, Suhaila Hassan said, the update showcases the diversity of AirAsia’s Allstars, who come from various backgrounds but share the same dedication in delivering world class service.

Currently, she said the team will continue gathering feedback from crew members as they work on the design and rollout, with the goal to implement the new policy by Ramadan next year.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Capital A, Tony Fernandes echoed the sentiment, saying that the airline’s strength lies in its diverse and outspoken workforce.

“When our cabin crew raised this with management, it was important for us to listen. Respecting different beliefs has always been part of our culture and is key to AirAsia’s success,” he said.

The airline confirmed that its signature red uniform will remain, now complemented by professionally designed hijab and trouser options similar to those used on Jeddah routes, ensuring comfort, safety, and a consistent brand identity across all flights.
