Malaysia Sets Sights on Canada’s Growing Halal Market, Boosting Bilateral Trade
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are forging new partnerships in the halal sector
Malaysia is looking to forge new partnerships in the halal sector with Canada, according to Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
With a Muslim population of over 1.15 million in Canada, demand for halal products is rapidly growing, Tengku Zafrul shared in an Instagram post.
During a recent meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Tengku Zafrul highlighted that Canada’s halal market, valued at C$1 billion (RM3.13 billion), presents substantial opportunities for Malaysian producers, especially in the food and beverage industry.
“Malaysia has the potential to play a key role in fulfilling the needs of this market through strategic collaborations and increased investment in the halal sector, further solidifying the country’s standing in the global halal industry,” he said.
The Asean-Canada Special Summit On Enhancing Asean Connectivity And Resilience in conjunction with the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits in Laos
During a meeting on the sidelines of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits in Laos, Tengku Zafrul highlighted that the Prime Minister reiterated his commitment to strengthening economic cooperation.
He pointed out that Malaysia-Canada economic relations have been on an upward trajectory, with bilateral trade reaching RM8.05 billion as of August, reflecting a 41 percent growth compared to the same period last year.
Since the implementation of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), bilateral trade has increased by 25 percent, benefiting from duty-free access for goods exchanged between the two nations.
This growth, he explained, was largely driven by a 68.1 percent rise in Malaysia’s exports to Canada, alongside a 16.8 percent increase in imports from Canada.
"Key sectors such as clean technology, agriculture, and aerospace continue to play a significant role in this growth," he said.
