Malaysia To Harness Blockchain Technology For A Transparent And Trusted Halal Certification System

Malaysia needs to leverage advanced technologies like blockchain to enhance its halal certification framework, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Speaking at the Global Halal Summit 2024 (GHAS 2024) yesterday, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamadi stated that countries such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, and Australia are already using this technology to improve transparency and combat fraud in halal certification.

"By adopting this technology, Malaysia can strengthen its halal certification processes, reduce trade barriers, and align with global standards.

"This strategic move will increase consumer confidence and bolster Malaysia's position as a leading global halal hub," he said.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Chairman of the Halal Industry Development Council, said that investment in training for the new generation of halal certification professionals is crucial as the halal economy continues to grow.

He stated that with the increase in global demand, the expansion of the qualified expert pool is essential to maintain the highest standards of authenticity and integrity.

While JAKIM remains the central authority in guiding this transition, Ahmad Zahid said that an improved regulatory framework will help manage the rising demand efficiently, coordinate certification processes, and uphold consistent and reliable halal practices.

He also mentioned that halal certification is fundamentally built on trust, transparency, and confidence, which are essential characteristics of institutions like JAKIM, playing a crucial role in this process.

Ahmad Zahid noted that while JAKIM's efforts to enhance halal certification and regulations are commendable, the rapid growth of the halal economy necessitates a robust regulatory framework and governance.

"Although the ultimate authority on halal certification rests with JAKIM and the State Islamic Departments as mandated by the Conference of Rulers, there is always room to elevate this governance structure to align with the rapidly evolving halal industry landscape," he said.

Additionally, he emphasized Malaysia's unwavering commitment to enhance the halal industry ecosystem, highlighting the nation's dedication to excellence in halal certification.
